The following is an update from Sasha’s new owners:

We have had the pleasure and privilege of being owned by Sasha for four months.  When we met, she was a very depressed and lethargic dog.  Her owner had suffered a stroke some 15 months previously, and it seemed that Sasha’s only exercise since then had been to wander into a small and very cluttered back garden.  She was lying on a sofa, and fell onto the floor when trying to greet us.  She was very stiff and “wobbly” on her hind legs.  We were told she was 8 years old, but as our other dogs (rescue Border Collie and Whippet) seemed to like her, we decided to take her on and see what could be done.

Improving her mobility involved lots of slow, short walks.  At first, when she tried to run after the other dogs, she simply fell over.  However, she soon looked much happier and interested in life, enjoying the company not only of the dogs, but our two cats, showing no aggression whatsoever.  She also appreciated her change of diet – especially her Glucosamine chews!

She had not been spayed.  Aware of the dangers of pyometra, and after full veterinary checks, we decided to have her spayed in mid-July.  We had been told that her last season had been in April.

Three nail-biting hours after leaving her at the Surgery, the telephone rang.  “Sasha is OK now but I couldn’t spay her – she nearly died under the anaesthetic and we had to resuscitate her with oxygen etc.”  You can imagine how we felt, especially when warned that she might experience a later seizure!  Thankfully, she recovered without further incident, although “woozy” for two days.  Only two weeks later, she came into season!  Someone’s dates were obviously wrong.

That was not the only wrong date.  After lengthy research, I managed to trace the company who had supplied the microchip.  (It had been taken over and changed names several times).  We then discovered that our “8 year old” was born in 1999 – so she is a venerable old lady of 11 years!  Knowing time is not on her side, we regard every day with Sasha as a bonus.

She can now walk for up to an hour, and loves chasing Tamasin (Whippet) – with little success, but they both enjoy the fun!  She can climb into the car with only minimal assistance, and becomes really excited when she hears the car moving from the garage to the drive, squeaking (that unmistakeable Shepherd squeak!) and bouncing up and down.  Our two cats curl up beside her, and one tries to wash her face!

Apart from flooding the kitchen floor every time she drinks, Sasha is the perfect dog.  Thank you, Jean, for finding this delightful and affectionate dog, and thanks to Devon GSD Rescue for letting us give her the really happy home she so deserves in her old age.
